It is also a city that often gets a bad reputation for things ranging from drunken gringos, cheap tequila and touristy zonkey rides, to violence and drug wars. Less than an hour south of downtown San Diego, you’ll arrive at the quaint Mexican beachside town of Playas de Rosarito. With its proximity to San Diego, the beautiful beaches, delicious food, artisan shops and welcoming locals, Rosarito is perfect for a quick weekend escape or a weeklong getaway vacation.Spend some time walking along the main street, Benito Juarez, where you’ll find taco stands with tantalizing aromas, dulcerias (candy shops) with piñatas hanging above, restaurants ranging from traditional Mexican to Asian cuisine, and stalls selling traditional Mexican arts and souvenirs. Baja’s Valle de Guadalupe, or Guadalupe Valley, produces 90% of all of the wine that comes from Mexico. Although the valley has been producing wine for nearly 100 years, just in the last decade has the region experienced the incredible growth that has turned it into an up-and-comer on the global scene. It’s now become an epicenter of northern Baja for boutique wineries, gourmet restaurants and chic hotels, garnering the attention of the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and the LA Times. ENSENADA BajaENSENADA

Ensenada is a coastal city in Baja, about two hours south of San Diego. It’s the third-largest city in Baja and is an important commercial, fishing and tourist port. The harbor of Ensenada welcomes multiple cruise ships a week and tourism is an important part of the local economy. With gourmet food, beautiful resorts, large beaches, surf spots, nightclubs and shops full of artisan crafts, there’s something for the entire family to enjoy, whether you’re just stopping in for the day or you’re planning a weekend escape. scorpion-baySAN JUANICO SCORPION BAY

San Juanico, better known as Scorpion Bay, is a small fishing village on the Pacific side of the peninsula that’s become a classic Baja surf spot. There are multiple point breaks that bring epic surf when the conditions are right. When a big south swell hits, the waves break at four points and rides can last for over a minute. Small days are great for beginner surfers while bigger days require a little more experience. There are a few small hotels around or many people camp.
