March 2025 Baja Bulletin

Semana Santa Travel

Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is coming up next month from April 12-20 and is a very busy time for travel in Baja, especially among Mexican nationals. Be sure to make hotel and travel reservations in advance. Most schools in the U.S. have spring break throughout the month of March so expect heavy travel this month as well.

FMM Checkpoints

There have been immigration checkpoints along the peninsula. Please be sure to get your FMM at the border when crossing into Mexico. If you will be in Mexico for 7 days or less, Discover Baja can issue your FMM for you. Please call 1-800-727-2252 for help.

Mexico/U.S. Tariffs

There are currently no changes or remifications on travel or the borders with the new tariffs that recently went into effect. We will advise of any new rules or changes that may take place.

Festival Artesanal de El Triunfo

On March 16, the small East Cape Town of El Triunfo will host its popular annual arts festival. The small town will fill up with people who come to enjoy music and folkloric dancing, arts and crafts, food vendors, and a chance to see local attractions. Learn more about what to do in this charming mining town in our El Triunfo article.

Road Conditions

There are numerous potholes and rough road conditions along the peninsula right now. Please drive slowly and only during daylight hours.

San José del Cabo Festival

The annual festival honoring San José del Cabo will be held from March 15-22 this year (it’s always right around  March 19, the feast day for its patron saint). The weeklong celebration of the city includes both religious events (a mass in honor of St. Joseph) and secular (the crowing of a festival queen as well as plenty of food, drink, and music).

Crossing in Mexicali West with Dogs

A reminder that there has been an increase in travelers being pulled over by police after crossing into Mexico at the southbound Mexicali West crossing and being ticketed for not having their dogs in crates. Technically, Mexican law requires pets to be restrained when riding in the car. We recommend purchasing a folding dog crate to use when driving through the border and this area in order to avoid getting ticketed.
