Aloha Vaqueros Exhibit in San Diego
An exhibit that just came from El Triunfo’s new Muvaca Museum (Cowboy of the California’s Museum) in Baja California Sur, is now showing at the San Diego History Center in Balboa Park through May 2025. This ambitious collaboration bridges thousands of miles and spans over three centuries, reflecting the enduring ties between San Diego, Baja California, and the Hawaiian Islands. In the early 1830s, vaqueros (cowboys) from the Californias began to teach Hawaiians how to manage cattle. The islanders learned quickly and adapted the equipment to their needs. From this mixture of styles and their mutual love of working on the land, the tradition of the Hawaiian cowboy, the Paniolo, was born. For more information, please visit the San Diego History Center website.
Mordidas Reminder
A reminder to be extra vigilant this time of year when police officers may be pulling over people for traffic violations hoping for a bribe (or mordida in Spanish). Please be courteous and polite, and ask for a written ticket (remember that it is illegal to give a police officer a bribe!). Our article here has some more information. Keep a printed copy of this document in your glovebox to hand to the officer.

FMM Reminder
There have been checkpoints along the peninsula for FMM tourist permits. Please remember to get your FMM at the border when crossing into Mexico. If you have gotten an FMM online, you still need to stop at the border when entering Mexico to have it stamped, otherwise it is considered invalid. Discover Baja can issue FMMs for Discover Baja members who will be in Mexico for 7 days or less.
