With temperatures beginning to cool down in Baja Sur, we’re bringing you a few of our favorite farm-to-table campestre-style restaurants that you’ll definitely want to add to your bucket list this season!
Los Tamarindos
San Jose Del Cabo
Tucked away in the farmlands of Las Animas Bajas is Huerta los Tamarindos (tel. 624/105-6031, www.lostamarindos.mx). The restaurant can be difficult to find, but it’s worth the effort. With the serene outdoor patio seating looking out onto the farm and surrounding hillsides, it’s easy to forget you’re in Los Cabos. The food is fresh and meticulously prepared, from unique ceviches and other seafood to free-range chicken and pork shank with green mole to the house “mezcalita” tamarind and mescal cocktail. After your meal, head up to the roof to check out the views. In addition to the restaurant, you can take cooking classes or take a tour of the organic farm.
Jazamango
Todos Santos
One of the top chefs in northern Baja, Javier Plascencia, has brought casual outdoor campestre-style eating to Baja Sur with Jazamango (tel. 612-688-1501, www.jazamango.mx). Using local products and organic ingredients, the food is carefully prepared. Diners will find appetizers like steamed mussels, Kumamoto oysters, and yellowfin tuna. For entrées, traditional dishes like pozole and chiles rellenos are offered alongside smoked pork belly and wood-grilled lamb. The outdoor dining room overlooks the garden where much of the produce comes from.
Acre
San José del Cabo
Restaurant and cocktail bar Acre (tel. 624-171-8226, www.acrebaja.com) is situated on 25 acres of farmland in Las Animas that was formerly a mango grove. The restaurant recently earned a green star from Michelin for its dedication to sustainability. The menu features fresh ingredients artfully prepared into dishes like beet salad and charred octopus. A seven-course tasting menu is available with or without a wine pairing. Sleek architecture creates an enjoyable setting, and there are pathways leading around the verdant grounds. The extensive cocktail list includes many drinks crafted from syrups that are house distilled using products sourced from the farm.
Flora Farms
San José del Cabo
The most popular (and most commercialized) farm-to-table experience in Cabo is at Flora’s Field Kitchen (tel. 624-355-4564, www.flora-farms.com) on the property of Flora Farms, where handmade food is crafted with fresh ingredients from the land. Popular with ex-pats and American tourists, you won’t find much Mexican food on the menu, but all meats are raised on the property, and all of the produce is local. The beautiful restaurant is set in lush gardens. Flora’s runs farm tours a few times daily; check with the restaurant directly for set times. A market, bar, pizzeria, ice cream cart, and curated gift shops are also on the property. Reservations should be made in advance.
Hierbabuena
Pescadero
Pass through the gates to Hierbabuena (tel. 612-149-2568, hierbabuenarestaurante.com) and you’ll walk right into the gardens, which provide not only the ingredients for the food, but also a beautiful backdrop for the restaurant. The whole restaurant is completely open air with just a corrugated metal roof covering and minimal décor. The focus here is on the beautiful gardens and the fresh food. The garden-inspired menu changes with what’s in season and growing in the gardens. They’re known for their wood fire pizzas, which feature fresh ingredients from the gardens that are mixed to create unique flavors. Other entrees like flank steak, fresh fish of the day, and baked eggplant, are all made from ingredients grown there on the property and locally sourced
