As of August 1, 2024, the CDC has new rules for dogs entering the U.S.
For dogs entering the U.S. from Mexico, the one form you will need is the CDC Dog Import Form. This is the form to use if your dog has been only in countries that are dog rabies-free or low-risk (which includes Mexico) in the 6 months before entering or returning to the U.S.
The free form is valid for 6 months from when it’s issued and can be used for multiple entry unless the dog visits a high-risk country during that time. Each dog must have its own form. If you are bringing more than one dog to the U.S., you will need to complete a separate form for each dog. The CDC Dog Import Form receipt can be printed or shown on a phone screen to U.S. customs officials or airlines.

How about reporting on the actual experience at the vehicle crossing points, San Ysidro and Tecate?
For those of us who travel back and forth regularly it has been universally inconsistent. Everyone who crosses gets a different response, usually ignoring whether or not there is a dog in the vehicle. I asked a CBP how they know if a dog is chipped. He said I would have to go to a CDC office to verify. In other words, it’s not CBP’s job to monitor that. Please investigate and report.
