The Caesar Salad Turns 100

This summer, Tijuana will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of one of its most famous creations—the Caesar Salad. The salad was invented—and still served today—at Restaurante Caesar’s on Avenida Revolución in the heart of Tijuana. The restaurant was founded in 1923 by an Italian immigrant, Caesar Cardini. Tijuana was enjoying a heyday in that time, mostly due to prohibition just over the border in the U.S. Legend has it that on a busy 4th of July weekend, the restaurant ran out of some staple ingredients so Cardini quickly created a salad using ingredients on hand. The result was the iconic salad that became famous worldwide.

Restaurante Caesar still serves the salad today, staying true to the original recipe. It’s made and served tableside, which adds a special flair of excitement. The restaurant is an upscale European-style bistro that attracts discerning Tijuanenses with its old-world charm and tradition. The Plascencia family has owned the restaurant since 2010 and take great care in being stewards of the iconic spot.

To celebrate the centennial of the Caesar Salad, there will be a string of events at the beginning of July. The events include the Centennial Gala on July 6th,  a paired 8-course dinner featuring vintage dishes with live big band music. The annual Caesar Salad street festival will take place this year on July 7th outside on Ave Revolución with wine, food, and of course, Caesar Salad.
