Mexico Elects First Woman President

Claudia Sheinbaum was elected on June 2nd as the first woman president of Mexico. Sheinbaum is the former mayor of Mexico City and a scientist who was part of the United Nations panel of climate scientists that received the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

Tijuana & Tecate Railroad Exhibit

The San Diego Model Railroad Museum, located in Balboa Park, will have an exhibit from June 11 to November 17 about the Tijuana and Tecate Railroad. The exhibit will explore the history and construction of the Tijuana and Tecate Railroad, the section of the San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railroad located across the Mexican Border. This exhibit walks visitors through the difficulties John D. Spreckels faced as he funded the construction and the aftermath of the railroad in the Mexican cities the trains passed through. San Diego/Ensenada Ferry Moves Forward

Plans are moving forward with a ferry service between San Diego and Ensenada. The service has bee conditionally approved through the company Azteca Ferries. The service would take 2 1/2 hours each direction and could be operating as soon as September 2024.

Record Number of Baja California Olympians

A number of athletes from the state of Baja California have already qualified for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. This will be the most olympians the state has ever sent to the games and a dozen more athletes still have a shot to earn last-minute tickets to Paris through regional qualifying tournaments. The athletes are Alexa Moreno, a gymnast from Mexicali; Natalia Escalera, a gymnast from Ensenada; Alexis Lopez and Miguel Carballo, rowers from San Felipe; Marta Ayala, an open water swimmer from Mexicali; and Daniela Souza, a taekwondo athlete from Tijuana.

Corazón de Vida Galas

The non-profit organization Corazòn de Vida will be hosting two large fundraising galas in Southern California this summer and fall. Their La Noche Blanca gala will take place in Orange County on July 13, 2024. And their Noche de Gala will take place in San Diego at the Hotel Del Coronado on November 2, 2024. Corazòn de Vida is an organization providing life changing support for orphaned and abandoned children in Baja. More information about the events and tickets can be found on the Corazón de Vida website.
