It’s no secret that Todos Santos is one of the chicest destinations on the Baja peninsula. Since ex-pat artists discovered the colonial town on the West Cape in the 1980s, Todos Santos has always had an implicit sophistication that eludes other parts of the peninsula.
Embodying that bohemian essence and a true Baja spirit is La Bohemia Baja Hotel Pequeño. The intimate boutique hotel is located in the heart of Todos Santos, walking distance to all of the restaurants, galleries, bars, shops, and town plaza. But inside the walls of La Bohemia, guests will find a well-curated sanctuary with lush grounds and posh accommodations.
Owners Andrew and Erin Wheelwright converted the property to its current state in 2014 (it was the old Las Casitas B&B). The old whitewashed adobe architecture is punctuated with eclectic details like beautiful Mexican textiles and colorful talavera tiles. The eight rooms feature modern indulgences like luxury linens and memory foam mattress, as well as thoughtful touches like local aromatherapy soaps, shampoos, and lotions.
In the center of the property is a lovely outdoor dipping pool and the large communal palapa, which operates as the center of the activity for the hotel. A traditional and freshly prepared breakfast is served here in the morning, and in the evening, guests gather round for mojitos or mezcal margaritas from the bar. There are plenty of areas for lounging, relaxing, and socializing, and it’s likely that you’ll have made a few new friends by the end of your stay.
La Bohemia is one of the only properties in Todos Santos to be able to offer both a prime in-town location in addition to beach access. This is because your stay also grants you access to the full-service El Faro Beach Club where you can enjoy a heated infinity-edge pool and restaurant/bar. With the stunning and nearly empty beach just a few steps away, you can lounge the day away on one of the hanging beds on the beach.
However, what you get when you stay at La Bohemia is not just a place to stay, but an entire experience. The vision for the hotel is to provide a comfortable base camp for exploring the region. They can facilitate adventures such as hiking into the sierras, whale watching, biking, surf lessons, overnight excursions, and more. They are excellent at curating experiences and adventures for their guests.
Andrew and Erin are incredibly enthusiastic about the region, and that enthusiasm is contagious. All of the guests who stay at La Bohemia come away with a glowing satisfaction from their stay and a newly discovered passion for the area. The only complaint I heard from any of the guests at La Bohemia is that they wish they had planned to stay for longer.
Perhaps the spirit of La Bohemia is best explained by Andrew and Erin themselves: “La Bohemia Baja is more than just a hotel. It’s the embodiment of our philosophy on traveling. We believe in the fresh air of the great outdoors, getting off the beaten path, excellent eating and drinking, and most importantly, a great night of sleep. La Bohemia Baja is a hotel by travelers for travelers and we have taken great care to create a cozy and upbeat environment where you can make the most of your time here in beautiful Baja California Sur.”
