Work is underway on a $700 million project to complete a new land port of entry, Otay Mesa East. The new border crossing, which will be open only to toll-paying users, is on track to open in 2017. The first phase (of three) is underway to construct a 1.5-mile stretch of a four-lane highway, state Route 11, which will link to state Route 905.
With 35 new lanes (27 northbound and 8 southbound), the Otay Mesa East border crossing will ease congestion as well as make it easier for commercial goods to cross the border.
